Good News to Filipino Maids in Singapore

Best news for Filipinos who’re working in Singapore as domestic workers. The Singapore government recently released that by the coming year, they’ll carry out a new law that will provide all overseas maids within their country a mandatory rest day every week. Reports stated that at present, there are 65,000 Filipino maids in Singapore.

According to a press release from Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM), “The recent weekly rest day requirement will apply to (overseas domestic workers) whose work permits are issued or renewed from 1 January 2013.”

The Ministry said the mandatory day-off would improve the worker’s efficiency and would certainly appeal to numerous foreign helpers to work in Singapore.

This current advancement might be a result of the campaigns and efforts of Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and various governments (where the maids come from) to grant the workers the opportunity of a weekly day off. Apparently this right is appreciated by overseas domestic workers in Hong Kong.

The new policy was welcomed by human rights organizations by saying that it is a first step towards the right path. However, they said that the new law still does not meet international standards.

This happens because within the new law, the boss can still inquire the maids to work on their rest days, so long as there’s a “mutual agreement” with the employer. The maid also need to be paid out by working on their rest days.

The Philippine embassy in Singapore indicated approval of the new law as it would benefit the many Filipina maids working in this Asian country.

Charge d’ affairs, Neal Imperial said, “This progressive policy change by MOM is a clear recognition that the rights of domestic workers are just like significant as the rights of every other worker in Singapore.”
