OTTAWA - Canada Friday backed the US pick for the new head of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, a Korea-born American physician known for fighting to bring medical services to poor communities across the world.

"Mr. Kim is a distinguished figure in global health and development, noted for his innovative work fighting the spread of AIDS and tuberculosis in developing countries," Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said. "We believe he is a strong candidate to lead the World Bank."

Only a few hours before the deadline for nominations, US President Barack Obama announced Kim as his choice for the Word Bank's top job.

Kim, 52, is also an anthropologist and president of the prestigious Dartmouth College.

Other top nominees to lead the World Bank include Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria's finance minister.

Kim's nomination surprised some banking officials because his name had not been mentioned previously among candidates likely to succeed Robert Zoellick, who is scheduled to leave the World Bank on June 30.

Under an implied understanding between Europe and the United States, the World Bank president is traditionally American and the International Monetary Fund president is European.

Canada broke with tradition by recommending Mexican central bank Governor Agustin Carstens to succeed Dominique Strauss-Kahn as the IMF's managing director last year. Instead, the job went to former French economic affairs minister Christine Lagarde.

The World Bank Group's board of directors is scheduled to select its next president in April.
